In this episode, I sat down with Aron Nakama, who’s the Head Novice Coach for the Ames Cyclone Aquatics Club. If you’re following this show you’ll notice this is the 3rd episode with a coach from ACAC. As I mentioned before, since I had previously lived in Ames, I stayed there a little longer, and so I had more time to talk people into this! So far that’s been the only club I’ve got the chance to interview more than one coach, and Aron was the last one.

In Aron’s case, there were a few reasons why I really wanted to get him on:

  • He’d been mentioned by every single coach I had interviewed up to this point;
  • He’s gone through a very unique path in swimming and coaching, having been a Head Coach at a young age, quitting coaching altogether to dedicate more time to his family, and then returning to coaching, to work exclusively with novice kids – we’ll talk more about that during the interview but I think there’s a LOT of lessons in that journey that could be of help to other coaches;
  • AND, he’s the guy who gave me my first full-time coaching job, and therefore this interview also had some moments when it was more like a therapy session for me…

As such, I once again had a great time recording this interview, and listening to it again while editing! As always, it’s available on iTunes, Spotify, Google Podcasts, and directly with the player below.

Here are a few links to things we discussed in this episode:

And again, many Thanks to my buddy Madu for the great soundtrack I choose for the podcast – check out his Instagram (@machete_bomb_madu) for a ton of great music! And also thanks to Zapslat for the sound effects.
